Pennsylvania immigration laws after 9/11
Pennsylvania immigration laws—and indeed, immigration laws throughout the United States—underwent vast changes after 9/11. A significant increase in the number of regulations, immigration requirements, and documentation was written into the United States Patriot Act, which became law on September 26, 2001.
One of the most salient changes resulting from the Act was that more power was given to law enforcement to combat terrorism, or suspected terrorism. It has since become easier for officials to detain, fingerprint, question, and deport immigrants and non-citizens on the basis of suspected terroristic acts. At the same time, more power was granted to government agencies to conduct searches of telephone communications, letters, and e-mails, as well as medical, financial, and other types of records.
In addition, more extensive background checks are now required for those attempting to obtain visas and green cards. For those suspected of visa or green card violations, deportation comes much more quickly than before 9/11.
These are only a sample of the changes to immigration law that occurred after 9/11. To obtain additional information or to discuss how these changes may affect your case, turn to the firm of Tahir Mella, Attorneys at Law.
